About Us...
| ICAA was initially incorporated in 1990 by a small group of die-hard Appaloosa enthusiasts who recognized the impact rampant cross-breeding was having on the "old style" Appaloosa type. It was felt that providing a cohesive network for breeders and fans of the Appaloosa "as they used to be" would focus interest and energies toward resurrecting the breed. | ||

1997 ICAA's growth in the number of registered horses and the
acquisition of more specific data regarding breed recognition and
evolving genetic information necessitated a re-incorporation to reflect a more finely tuned
intent and purpose.
In 1997, ICAA became the first Appaloosa breed registry to close its books to all non-Appaloosa breeds. Click here for ICAA's on-line Stud Book |

By October 2004, ICAA had registered over 1,400 Appaloosas and has a membership of over 1,500 individuals. (CLICK HERE FOR MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION.) The Association -- "By Design" The ICAA founders recognized early that the role this organization would play in the diverse world of the Appaloosa required both consistency and elements of flexibility. Because the association's purpose--to develop a purebred blood-breed Appaloosa that would meet the most stringent scientific acceptance--must have a long-term, unwavering method of achievement, ICAA created its Board of Trustees to be as closed and non-variable as possible. The Board, whose function is to maintain the integrity of the ICAA's purpose, consists of the currently active Founding Members and those individuals who have been specifically chosen by other Board members. Because the equine world is a dynamic and ever-evolving industry, ICAA relies on its membership through their elected Officers and District Representatives to merge the needs and trends of the Appaloosa world with the ICAA's purpose. This duality of design has proven to be exceptionally effective considering that in 1990 the closest to an eight-generation purebred Appaloosa that could be found was an F-2 rank and in 2003 the first ICAA-registered F-5's (horses with five generations of bona fide Appaloosa-Appaloosa breeding) were foaled.
