ICAA believes the blood-breed Appaloosa is a BREED, not a "breed with a color preference" nor a "color breed". However, ICAA also believes that a coat pattern is a trait of the blood-breed Appaloosa, just as sound conformation is a trait--neither more important than the other nor neither of which should appear merely by happenstance.

Correct conformation is pretty much the same for the majority of horses since it indicates a biomechanically efficient structure for the functions humankind requires of the horse, such as riding and pulling. There are certain differences between particular types/breeds—a straight shoulder is correct for a horse who pulls, for example, but not for one that is ridden—but by and large, these are differences of detail rather than wholesale deviations.

For more details on ICAA "Breed Standards" (Desired Traits and Characteristics), please visit our "Breed Standards" page.

What is the purpose of maintaining a stud book?

The primary means of attaining blood-breed status hinges on maintaining a stud book that provides a means to verify pedigrees as well as to illustrate the growth and development of blood purity.

Since 1997 ICAA has maintained a closed book--that is, mares and stallions eligible for ICAA registry must be the product of a registered Appaloosa mare covered by a registered Appaloosa stallion. (Geldings and spayed mares, since they are not breeding stock, may be of crossed parentage as long as they meet all other ICAA registry requirements.)

Prior to 1997 the stud book was more-or-less "open"--with guidelines, of course, such as no known paint/pinto ancestry. During this time we also had an amnesty period wherein horses of unknown ancestry--but, through inspection, were believed to be phenotypically Appaloosa-- were recognized. (This is a standard method for starting and developing any breed registry stud book.) When ICAA re-incorporated in 1997 and closed the books, all horses registered up to that point were grandfathered in.

This on-line stud book lists all ICAA-registered horses from #1001 to  #2311 (August 2003). It will be updated several times a year.

Horses in this ICAA On-Line Stud Book are listed in Alphabetical Order.

The following abbreviations or designations are used throughout this on-line ICAA stud book:

  • # = Regular Registry (both parents are registered Appaloosas OR geldings/spayed mares of cross-breeding)

  • A = Appendix/Amnesty Registry (closed in its entirety in 1997)

  • ID = Identification Registry (mares of QH or TB registry. The few ID mares were grandfathered in when the books were closed and their offspring result in a "#" number.)

  • R = Reservation Registry (a short-lived amnesty program for Native American horses)

  • B = Breeding Stock Classification (not eligible for show or exhibition; no coat pattern)

  • F2 = Foundation Registry (both parents AND all four grandparents registered Appaloosas)

  • F3 = Foundation Registry (both parents, all four grandparents, AND all eight great-grandparents are registered Appaloosas)

  • F4 = Foundation Registry (both parents, all four grandparents, all eight great-grandparents, AND all 16 great-great-grandparents are registered Appaloosas)

  • F5 = Foundation Registry (both parents, all four grandparents, all eight great-grandparents, all 16 great-great-grandparents, AND all 32 great-great-great-grandparents are registered Appaloosas)

Sex Designation: m = mare/filly, s = stallion/colt, g = gelding

Sires and Dams are listed with their primary registries listed. ICAA-registered sires and dams and their ICAA registration numbers are listed in red followed by the ApHC registration number as known. If the sire and/or dam is registered with any registry other than ICAA or ApHC, it is indicated by abbreviation. The abbreviations are as follows:

  • ACBA = Appaloosa Color Breeders Association

  • AHA or IAHR = Arabian

  • ApHCC = Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada

  • AQHA = American Quarter Horse Association

  • BLM = Bureau of Land Management (Mustang)

  • IBHA = International Buckskin Horse Association

  • JC = Jockey Club (Thoroughbred)

  • (grade) = unregistered

  • Unknown = no information known about this horse

Other abbreviations appearing with a sire's or dam's registration number usually refer to ApHC registration designations:

  • B = Breeding Stock

  • ID = Identified by ApHC for purposes of breeding

  • N = Non-colored

  • PC = Pedigree Certificate (phased out)

  • T = Tentative, may be moved up to Permanent registry

  • N/C = Non-Characteristic

  • CN = Characteristics, non- colored
